Guwahati, May 11: Two employees of the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APDCL), Samaguri Sub-Division, Nagaon, were caught red-handed by a team from the Vigilance and Anti-corruption Directorate, in Geruamukh, today.
According to reports, the accused demanded a bribe of Rs. 7,000 from an APDCL customer in exchange for relaxing a fine of Rs. 35,000 that was imposed for allegedly bypassing an electric meter at the customer’s home.
The customer then filed a complaint with the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate against the said employees. After receiving the complaint, the Vigilance team, laid a trap, and Mintu Bora, a contractual staff member of the Samaguri Electrical Sub-Division, was caught red-handed accepting the bribe.
Based on Bora’s confession, Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma, a Meter Reader of the Nagaon Electrical Sub-division, was also apprehended. The duo will be taken to the Vigilance Headquarters in Guwahati for further investigation and legal proceedings.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption took to social media, tweeting, “Today, a team from the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate caught Mintu Bora red-handed after he accepted a bribe at Geruamukh, Nagaon, in conspiracy with Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma, BC/MR, APDCL, for providing relief to the complainant from a fine against an electricity bypass connection.”
A follow-up tweet stated, “In the same trap operation, Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma, Bill Clerk/Meter Reader, Nagaon Electrical Sub-Division, APDCL, has also been apprehended from Maz Pathari, Borghat, Nagaon, for demanding a bribe and accepting it through the middleman, in conspiracy with him.”
