Assam: Two arrested in Jorabat for trying to smuggle cattle into Meghalaya

Guwahati, Aug 6: Two cattle smugglers were arrested with 14 live cattle at Jorabat area near Guwahati on Monday.

The smugglers, identified as Abdul Kashem (23) & Sahadat Alam (22), were arrested while trying to smuggle the cattle into Meghalaya.

“We got a tip off regarding the cattle smuggling. An operation was launched near Jorabat area near Guwahati and successfully seized 14 cattle from the truck,” said a police official.

Cattle smuggling has been rampant in the Indo-Bangladesh border and the state police have been keeping a strict vigilance to track all the culprits who engage in such activities.

To prevent cattle smuggling across the Indo-Bangladesh border, the Border Security Force (BSF) has been taking a number of steps.

The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, empowers the police to enter the house of an accused and inspect, search, and seize properties acquired in the last six years with money earned from illegal cattle trade.

The Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021, bans the slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs are in the majority, or within a five-kilometre radius of a temple, Satra (Vaishnavite monastery), or other institutions as may be prescribed by the authorities.

However, even with such a stringent law in place, cattle smuggling continues in the state.
