Guwahati, Dec 2: Two Assam workers, who were rescued along with 39 other trapped workers in Uttarkashi’s Silkyara tunnel, returned back safely to Assam’s Kokrajhar.
40-year-old Ram Prasad Narzary and 35-year-old Sanjay Basumatary returned to their village in Ramfalbil in Kokrajhar.
A total of three villagers from Ramfalbil were working in Silkyara tunnel but one of them, Rocket Basumatary, escaped the ordeal as he was on day duty at the project site.
The family members of Narzary and Basumatary were happy after they returned back to their home following their 17 day ordeal inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel.
“We got oxygen, food and water adequately. When we were trapped, we were nervous but when we sent the message about our condition, our team helped us with food, water and oxygen. I am happy to return back to my home safely. I thank everyone for the support and prayers for our safety,” said Ram Prasad Narzary on his return.
They had gone to Uttarakhand in May to work in the under-construction tunnel.
“We realised we were trapped only when we tried to leave. For the first 24 hours, there was no food or supplies. Later, when a pipe was inserted, we were provided with oxygen, water bottles and food. After that, we didn’t face any shortages. We chatted among ourselves to pass time. We knew we will be rescued,” said Sanjay Basumatary.
The workers were rescued from the tunnel on Tuesday night after a long-drawn operation.
