Assam University denies permission for Iftar feast, students call it unfair

Must read

Guwahati, March 20: The authorities of Assam University Silchar (AUS) have denied permission for students to conduct a religious feast on campus, citing the secular character of the Indian Constitution.

The students, who had planned to organize Daawat-e-Iftaar 2025 on the occasion of Ramadan, called the decision an injustice to their religious beliefs before cancelling the event.

The feast was jointly planned by undergraduate, postgraduate, and research students. According to a postgraduate student, similar events were held in the past two years, with university representatives, including the registrar, attending them.

“We fund Daawat-e-Iftaar ourselves through personal contributions. Due to this delay in permission, we have no choice but to cancel it this year,” the student said.

“The Vice-Chancellor will return next week, but by then, we will have little time to raise funds and organize the event. However, we must say this is unfair to one religious belief because the university has allowed other religious events,” he added.

Reacting to the matter, Assam University Registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath, in a statement denying permission, wrote: “This office does not directly involve itself in religious matters; therefore, we cannot officially permit any religious activities.”
