Assam: Woman murdered on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Kokrajhar

Guwahati, Nov 14: A woman in Assam’s Kokrajhar district was reportedly murdered by a man on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.

The deceased woman has been identified as Marshila Murmu.

According to reports, the incident took place at Bhogjhara Samarpur village in Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district of Assam.

Murmu was allegedly killed by a person namely Lakhan Tudu of Phulkumari village.

Tudu was held by the locals in the village and was handed over to the police.

“The accused have confessed the crime. We have sent him to jail,” said a police officer.

Around 25-30 cases were registered every year untill a few years ago but in 2022, only four-five cases were registered. As per the provision of the Act, witch hunting is a cognisable, non-bailable and non-compoundable offense, which can lead to upto 10 years life imprisonment.
