Guwahati, Apr 8: A worker lost his life when the crane he was operating fell from a height of 116 feet at the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) dam in Gerukamukh which is nearing completion.

The victim has been identified as Manoj Sonowal (26) from Salakhbari in Gogamukh.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon when the crane crashed to the ground from its elevated position.

Rescue teams recovered Sonowal’s body, which had been buried under a pile of earth at the site.

This is the second fatal accident at the SLHEP site in less than a year. On May 27, 2024, another worker, Putul Gogoi from Gogamukh, was killed when a boulder fell from an elevation of approximately 100 meters on the left bank hill, striking him while he was working on pile cap reinforcement for concreting upstream of the dam axis.

NHPC Limited commenced construction work of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in January 2005 after obtaining forest clearance on October 12, 2004. However, due to agitations and protests by local stakeholders, the project construction work was stalled from December 2011 to October 2019. The project construction resumed from October 15, 2019, after the clearance by National Green Tribunal.

NHPC has informed that more than 90% of the total work of the project has already been completed. The construction of all major components, including dam, power house, and hydromechanical works, is fast progressing towards completion.
