Guwahati, Mar 17: In a crackdown against narcotic items, police on Sunday seized Rs 24 crore worth of yaba tablets and arrested two persons in Sribhumi district along the interstate border with Mizoram.
Based on intelligence inputs, police launched an operation and successfully seized the contraband items.
During the operation, the police team intercepted a truck at the Puwamara bypass and discovered the contraband items hidden in a secret compartment of the truck.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, police found 80,000 yaba tablets hidden inside a concealed compartment of the truck.
Commonly referred to as “crazy medicine” in Thai, yaba is a potent and addictive mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine.
Police also arrested two suspects, who were residents of the Cachar district in Assam’s Barak Valley.
“We have launched an investigation to trace the supply chain and identify those involved in the trafficking network,” a senior police official said.
Sources said drug smugglers have been using Barak Valley as a key transit hub, and smuggling activities continue through the border region.
The incident underscores the growing challenge of yaba trafficking in northeastern states, which are increasingly being used as transit points for illegal drugs from Southeast Asia.
