Guwahati, Dec 20: The Guwahati police on Friday detained Bhupen Borah, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) following a massive demonstration by Assam Youth Congress members in the city earlier during the day.
The massive demonstration was held by Assam Youth Congress members in Dispur to protest against the death of a Congress worker during the protest march organised as part of the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ campaign on December 18.
Hundreds of Youth Congress members took to the streets demanding justice for the deceased Congress worker, Mridul Islam, who had reportedly died after exposure to tear gas shells fired by the police during the protest in front of the Governor’s house.
Apart from Bora, All India Youth Congress leader, Uday Bhanu Shiv and senior spokesperson, Ratul Kalita were among the other senior party leaders detained during the protest. They are currently being kept at the 10th APBn in Kahilipara in the city.
During the demonstration, the entire surroundings echoed with anti-BJP government slogans like ‘BJP government go back’, ‘CM Himanta Biswa Sarma go back’ and ‘Assam police go back’.
Youth Congress members went ahead with the protest despite the city police not giving them the required permission. They also tried to break through the barricades, though the police managed to control them.
According to police sources, Bhanu Shiv was put in ‘preventive detention’ since Friday morning ahead of the protest.
