Guwahati, Aug 25: A local youth was shot dead near the India-Bangladesh border in Mankachar in South Salmara district of Assam on Wednesday night. While an official word is awaited on the person or group behind the gunshot, locals are accusing the BSF of shooting the youth. Assam police, meanwhile, have begun an investigation into the incident.

According to police sources, on Wednesday night in Gudoli village, just 500 meters from the India-Bangladesh border, a local youth was found injured with bullet wound, whom the locals identified as one Monirujjaman aka Fakir, who died on the way to hospital.

“An incident occurred, where a fisherman has died. Till now the BSF has not confirmed. However, the family members are alleging the BSF fired. We will do the confirmation after enquiry. We are yet to find out whether he is a fisherman or smuggler. One fishing instrument and a torch light has been recovered from the deceased,” said Saifur Ali, DSP (Border), South Salmara.

The locals have claimed that he was a fisherman who was fishing at night when he was allegedly gunned down by BSF jawans on patrol. However, BSF is yet to confirm firing from their side, and there has been no official statement from BSF so far.

“The locals heard gunshot and rushed to the spot and found the youth, the youth was rushed to local hospital and on way died but before his death he has told locals that he was shot at by BSF jawans. This youth came from a poor family and used to do day labour and catch fish at night for a living,” said a local villager.
