Guwahati, Aug 17: Two Assamese non-feature films received special mention at the 70th National Film Awards on Friday, including Hargila – The Greater Adjutant Stork, directed by IPS officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

The documentary highlights the plight of the endangered Hargila, also known as the Greater Adjutant Stork, and showcases the tireless conservation efforts of wildlife biologist Purnima Devi Barman. Barman, along with her “Hargila Army,” comprised mostly of local women, have played a pivotal role in protecting this rare bird.

The film captures the essence of a species on the brink of extinction and the human determination to preserve it. Produced by PI Entertainment, the documentary emphasizes the ongoing conservation efforts in Assam, where the largest population of Hargila is found in Kamrup district.

“I want to dedicate this recognition to all those involved in conserving the Hargila, a species once tethering on the edge of extinction,” said director Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

The Greater Adjutant Stork is one of the top ten most endangered bird species globally, according to the IUCN. Barman’s grassroots conservation efforts have made a significant impact in Assam.

Additionally, another Assamese film, Aimee Baruah’s Birubala, also received special mention at the awards.
