Guwahati, April 15: The Government of Assam has issued fresh set of directions regarding the use of official languages in the state, reinforcing Assamese as the compulsory medium for all government work, while ensuring regional inclusivity through Bengali and Bodo in specific areas.

Issued by the Governor under the Assam Official Language Act, 1960, the notification comes into effect from April 15, 2025, and mandates that all government notifications, office memoranda, acts, rules, regulations, scheme guidelines, and transfer or posting orders be issued in both English and Assamese across the state.

However, taking into account the linguistic diversity of the state, the notification also prescribes the following:

In the Barak Valley, Bengali will be used in addition to English for all official communication.

In the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Bodo will accompany English for official use.

The same applies to Hill Districts falling under the Sixth Schedule areas, where local languages are to be appropriately used alongside English.

All central government-issued notifications, laws, and regulations must be translated into Assamese (and Bodo or Bengali, where applicable) within 30 days of receipt. A similar process will be undertaken for legacy documents over the next two years, with support from university language departments.

Despite the expanded use of regional languages, the notification clarifies that English will remain the authoritative version in cases of legal ambiguity or discrepancy. Additionally, all court-related documents and communications with the Government of India will continue to be in English.

To assist with translations, the use of the Anuvaad Bhashini App has been recommended, though officials are expected to exercise due diligence to ensure accuracy.
