Guwahati, Jan 15: The people of Assam joyously celebrated the harvest festival of Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu on Monday. The morning witnessed the vibrant festivities of Bhugli Bihu, with Deepjyoti Club hosting a grand celebration at Lalsing field in Kharguli, Guwahati.
To uphold the Assamese tradition of Bhogali Bihu, women were observed engaging in the traditional Bihu dance after the burning of Meji or Bhelaghar.
Following the Uruka feast on Sunday night, people illuminated Meji, a traditional hut-like bonfire crafted from bamboo, dry leaves, wood, and offshoots. This bonfire served as a communal space for feasting on ‘Uruka’ and was set ablaze the next morning.
As the flames flickered, prayers for peace and the well-being of families and loved ones resonated, accompanied by expressions of gratitude to the Almighty for the bountiful harvest. Magh Bihu, also recognized as Bhogali Bihu, remains a cherished festival in the state of Assam, celebrated with enthusiasm and cultural richness.
