Assam’s opposition Mahajot over, Congress writes to high command to sever ties with AIUDF, BPF

Guwahati, Aug 31: The much hyped 10 party Mahajot (grand alliance) led by congress which took on the BJP led alliance in Assam in the Assembly polls earlier this years has collapsed, with Congress announcing that it has written to its high command about the party’s state unit decision to sever the alliance with Lok Sabha Member Badruddin Ajmal led AIUDF and Hagrama Mphilary’s Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

A core committee meeting, presided by Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora observed that ‘Mahajot’ alliance partner AIUDF’s behaviour and attitude in relation to BJP party has baffled the members of the Congress party.

“The AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) leaderships’ and senior members continuously and mysteriously praising the BJP party and the Chief Minister (Himanta Biswa Sarma) has affected the public perception of the Congress party. In this connection, after a long discussion, the Core Committee members of APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) unanimously decided that AIUDF can no longer remain an alliance partner of ‘Mahajot’ and in this regards will send intimation to AICC,” Congress’s chief spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharma said.

She said that in Monday’s meeting the discussion was also held with regard to the alliance with BPF.

“Since BPF had already expressed their unwillingness in various forums to remain in the ‘Mahajot’, therefore the APCC President has been given full authority to take decision on this matter and intimate the High Command,” she said.

The main opposition Congress managed 29 seats in the March-April elections, three seats more than 2016 polls. Other partners of the 10-party “Mahajot”- the AIUDF won 16 seats up from 13 last time, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) got four seats against 12 seats in previous polls and the Communist Party of India-Marxist won just one seat.

Reacting to the Congress statement, the AIUDF has also issued a press statement saying that the Congress decision is ‘unfortunate’. AIUDF also stated that the Mahajot was an alliance of all secular political parties of Assam and Congress has taken an ‘one-sided’ decision to break the alliance.
