Guwahati, Dec 4: Two of Assam’s iconic landmarks—the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar and the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in Guwahati—are poised for a major transformation under a ₹191.88 crore tourism development initiative. These ambitious projects, part of a nationwide effort to elevate India’s tourism infrastructure, aim to preserve Assam’s cultural and natural heritage while enhancing visitor experiences.
Rang Ghar – Reviving Assam’s Royal Legacy
Once a grand pavilion for the Ahom royalty, the 18th-century Rang Ghar, often called the “Colosseum of the East,” is set to become a world-class cultural destination. With a ₹94.76 crore makeover, the site will retain its historical significance while incorporating modern amenities to attract tourists from around the globe. The transformation will include:
Artisan Village showcasing traditional Assamese crafts
Modern Amphitheatre for cultural performances and Bihu celebrations
Food Court serving local delicacies
Clock Tower and Musical Fountain to enhance the aesthetic appeal
Façade Improvements that preserve the architectural authenticity
These upgrades aim to position Rang Ghar as a must-visit historical attraction, blending heritage with contemporary tourism facilities.
Assam State Zoo & Botanical Garden – A Modern Conservation Hub
The Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden, a vital green lung in Guwahati, will undergo a ₹97.12 crore transformation to become a state-of-the-art conservation and tourism hub. The project focuses on improving visitor amenities and adopting modern conservation practices, including:
Upgraded Animal Enclosures to meet global welfare standards
Eco-friendly Zones and Interactive Exhibits for a hands-on visitor experience
Electric Buggies and improved Pathways for easier navigation
Visitor Information Centres, Cafés, and Digital Guides to enhance comfort and engagement
Enhanced Safety and Security Systems for both visitors and wildlife
The project aims to balance conservation efforts with a world-class tourism experience, making it a model for sustainable wildlife tourism in India.
A Boost for Assam’s Tourism Sector
These developments are expected to significantly boost Assam’s tourism potential, preserving its rich heritage while offering modern attractions. They will:
