Shillong, Sept 23: Sualkuchi, Assam’s textile hub, has been globally recognized as one of the best tourism villages in the craft category. Nicknamed the “Manchester of Assam,” this village is renowned for its rich tradition of silk weaving, particularly handloom production.
Located 35 km from Guwahati on the Brahmaputra River’s north bank, Sualkuchi is the epicentre of Assam’s textile industry, specializing in Muga Silk, Pat Silk, Eri Silk and Endi cloth.
Artisans craft exquisite Mekhela chadors and Gamosas from these materials, highly sought after domestically and internationally.
As one of the world’s largest weaving villages, Sualkuchi’s recognition boosts Assam’s tourism and textile sectors, showcasing its cultural heritage and artisanal expertise.
