GUWAHATI, Aug 05: The Congress-led 18-party United Opposition Forum Assam (UoFA) has announced that their alliance will continue till the 2026 assembly elections in the state to oust BJP from power.
Leaders of the UoFA sat in a crucial meeting at a city hotel on Sunday evening and decided to contest the upcoming by-election to 5 assembly constituencies unitedly.
“The party which has wining possibility will field their candidates while other alliance partners will extend their support,” Assam congress spokesperson Bedabrata Borah said.
“All the parties decided to work unitedly till the 2026 assembly elections. For that, every party will sacrifice their own interests to defeat the BJP,” Bora said.
“We will uphold unity until the assembly elections and to boost our activities. For by-elections, we will nominate common candidates and work collectively to ensure their victory,” he added.
Earlier, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah said the congress wants to fight the by-election alone as the workers of the party do not want an alliance with other groups.
The main focus of the meeting was the upcoming by-election in 5 constituencies besides upcoming panchayat elections.
The meeting also condemned the state government for failing to draw the Centre’s attention towards flood and erosion problems properly, resulting in no concrete step in the Union Budget.
The meeting further criticized Asam chief minister Himanya Biswa Sarma for targeting Congress and polarizing the voters for his gain.
The meeting further opposed anti-people policies of the state government, especially price hike making the lif of common people miserable.
