Shillong, April 25: Dr. Alok Singh, the assistant professor in the Hindi department of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), has filed a First Information Report (FIR) after being brutally assaulted allegedly by NEHUSU members a day before in his office chamber for having a ‘different ideology’.
The FIR was filed on Friday at the Mawkynroh outpost, which names the president of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) Sandy Sohtun and five other students for their alleged involvement in the incident.
“I am deeply saddened to inform you that on April 24, at around 4.45pm, the president of NEHUSU, along with five accomplices, forcibly locked me inside my chamber in the department. During this incident, they physically assaulted me and threatened to kill me by holding a scissor to my neck,” Singh said in his FIR submitted before the Officer in-charge Mawkynroh outpost.
“As a result of this violent attack, I have sustained injuries to my head, legs and hands. I am extremely distressed and traumatized by this event. As a teacher, I now feel unsafe and fearful within the campus premises. I respectfully urge you to take immediate and appropriate action regarding this serious matter to ensure my safety and uphold the dignity of the institution,” he further stated in the FIR.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Dr Alok Singh further narrated the incident and said, “NEHUSU president and five other students came to my chamber and closed the door. I asked what happened, he said – sit down and don’t speak, while two others were holding my hands and were continuously beating me from my head, hands and legs.”
“When I asked what the matter was, they said I was doing politics. But I had not done anything wrong. This incident has really affected me mentally and physically. Therefore, I pray for justice and for my safety and security,” he added.
He also mentioned that he was accused by the assaulters of having a different ideology, because of which he was assaulted. “I kept asking them what happened, tell me. But they kept beating me. They said – you are doing politics here… Bringing different ideology here,” he told Hub News earlier in the day.

He was assaulted for his alleged links with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Strongly condemning the incident, the teaching fraternity of the university on Friday staged a peaceful protest in front of the Vice Chancellor’s office, seeking assurance from the administration and demanding concrete steps to ensure safety and security of faculty members.
The NEHU faculty members also demanded the university authorities, central government, and law enforcement agencies, to take appropriate action without delay and miscreants shall be behind the bars for justice.
