Awareness Programme for farmers on Safe Use of Pesticides; held in NEHU, Tura campus

Tura,20 March: The Institute of Pesticide Formulation Technology (IPFT), Gurugram, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Govt. of India in collaboration with the Department of Agribusiness Management and Food Technology, NEHU, Tura campus organized a Farmers Awareness Programme and Workshop on Safe and Judicious Use of Pesticides and Application of New Generation Formulation for Crops, today at the NEHU, Tura campus, conference hall.

This one day workshop saw participation of approximately 350 farmers from the Garo Hills region, who came in to enhance their knowledge on the various techniques and organic way of farming practices. They were also provided with a safety kit containing googles and gloves by the organizers after the workshop.

The programme started off with an inaugural session of the workshop which saw the presence of Prof. Sujata Gurudev, Campus Director, NEHU, Tura; Prof. Deepak Bhagat, HoD, Department of Agribusiness Management & Food Technology, NEHU, Tura; Dr. Gino A Sangma, Assistant Professor, Department of Agribusiness Management & Food Technology, NEHU, Tura; Dr. Mohana Krishna Reddy Mudiam, Director, IPFT and his team. It also saw the presence of Prof. P. S. Shukla, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Meghalaya, as the chief guest, who was connected virtually.

With the objective to ensure that the farmers are effectively involved in enhancing the productivity in terms of the farming practices, the program envisions to help farmers in the knowledge and to apply to their farms the different technologies in regards to their farm management practices.

The workshop also focused on popularization of the use of locally available botanicals and bio-pesticides along with zero budget formulations to minimize the pesticide residues, altogether promoting organic and natural farming practices along with integrated pest management programs.

“The farmers will know about the good agricultural practices and also know about how to prepare the pesticide formulation at field with the local available plants”, said Dr. Mohana K. R. Mudiam, Director, IPFT while speaking to HUB.

This programme is part of ‘Agricultural Extension Series’ of the Department of Agribusiness Management & Food Technology, NEHU, Tura, which attempts to help farmers of the region to get information regarding scientific research and new knowledge in agricultural practices, food technology and agriculture business, and also provide its students to have grassroot exposure and experience.
