Baghmara, March 7: The luxury of heading out to work or back from the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex on motor transport has just been cut for the many officers and staff, including the deputy commissioner and Superintendent of police, after the only lifeline road to the colony from the Baghmara bridge collapsed, two days ago.
The mishap occured for want of a retaining wall to protect the road, something that failed to be noticed by the “expert” engineers from the state PWD who tried to salvage the situation a little too late.
In anticipation of the danger of collapse, work for a retaining wall hastily began only recently, but it was too late as the fragile road, unable to withstand the pressure of vehicular traffic, gave way on Tuesday.
A blame game has since erupted with each side passing the buck.
Sources in the PWD say that the road has been under the jurisdiction of the building division of the PWD for the past many years and wasn’t handed over to the roads division, for reasons best known to authorities.
While the finger pointing continues, officials including the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police along with their entourage are compelled to trudge across the damaged portion to waiting cars on the other side.
The demand for a two wheeler is now at a premium in Baghmara given that bikes are the only form of transport that can navigate what little remains of the narrow road.
