Resubelpara, Sept 27: In an effort to celebrate the abundance of quality bananas in the North Garo Hills region as well as to promote banana and its products, the first phase of the ‘Banana Festival’ was held at Bajengdoba C&RD Block in Gokulgre Village on Wednesday. The event showcased the diverse range of banana products while promoting their pivotal role as major suppliers to neighbouring states, particularly Assam.
The event was organised by District Administration in collaboration with the Agriculture and Horticulture Department, Social Welfare Department, ICDS, MSRLS, District Medical and Health Office, MBDA, and MBMA,
It should be mentioned that the North Garo Hills district has chosen Banana as the One District One Product (ODOP) Initiative under the PMFME scheme, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, which seeks to promote a product that encapsulates the essence of the region.
During the program, Nitul Das, Assistant General Manager of MBDA, North Garo Hills, welcomed the gathering. Dr. A.M. Sangma, Senior Medical & Health Officer of North Garo Hills, spoke about Ayushman Bharat and nutrition. Jakrim Ch. Momin, Horticulture Development Officer, emphasized the importance of agriculture and horticulture crops for doubling farmers’ income.
One of the successful entrepreneurs from Resubelpara, Sengmin K. Sangma, shared his entrepreneurial journey and encouraged other farmers present at the meeting. Salje Mary D. Sangma, a member of Bakrime SHG and a successful entrepreneur, who will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also shared her happiness with Hub News. She informed that she has the opportunity to meet the PM because of her success.
Stalls were adorned with various banana products, ranging from ripe to unripe bananas, as well as other processed products such as banana chips, bread, jam, banana butter, banana cakes, and more. Additionally, handicrafts were also put on display.
Poshan Maah, a flagship program under Poshan Abhiyan, was also observed simultaneously, spreading awareness about the importance of nutrition and health supplements for pregnant mothers, lactating mothers, infants, and adolescents. The program aimed to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate, Child Mortality Rate, and Maternal Mortality Rate.
Speaking to Hub News, the District Social Welfare Officer, Norimchi Sangma, provided information about Poshan Maah and the main objective of organizing this banana festival.
