Guwahati, Aug 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday expressed concerns that ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh might lead to the country becoming a safe haven for insurgent groups from the Northeast. Sarma emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent such a scenario, which could have significant security implications for the region.
“During Sheikh Hasina’s regime, all Northeast-based insurgent groups were driven out of Bangladesh. However, given the current political turmoil, Bangladesh might again become a safe haven for these insurgents,” Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.
He, however, expressed hope that the Indian government and the new government in Bangladesh will coordinate effectively to prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for Northeast insurgent groups.
“We have hope and trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We believe that our Central government will be in constant touch with the Bangladesh government there,” the CM said.
