Shillong, July 19: The Meghalaya government has successfully evacuated 405 students in two days following intensification of violence and protests in Bangladesh.
Of these 405 students, 80 are from Meghalaya, 131 from other Indian states; 249 students are from Nepal, and 8 from Bhutan. In addition, 4 tourists have also been evacuated.
This was informed by the government of Meghalaya via a press statement on Friday, where it said the evacuation took place on July 18 & 19.
It said significant steps have been taken to provide assistance and facilitate evacuations in coordination with Bangladesh High Commission, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and Chittagong, the Landport Authority in Dawki, and the Exporters Association.
A facilitation centre has been established at the Dawki border, staffed by a nodal officer, a senior police officer, an executive officer from the Landport Authority of India, and a health team including a doctor. The centre is well-equipped with an ambulance, medical supplies, and transportation facilities to aid evacuees.
For emergency communication, a helpline has been activated, allowing parents and students to seek assistance. Senior IPS Officer Abhijit Saptarshi has been appointed by the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh as the nodal officer overseeing the evacuation efforts and providing security support. Contact information has been shared with both students and parents to ensure smooth communication.
A dedicated team of officers from Meghalaya, led by a senior official, is monitoring the situation around the clock to provide continuous support. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh has also shared additional emergency contact numbers.
It has assured that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and will maintain close monitoring of the situation. “The Government of Meghalaya urges all students and parents to adhere to local advisories and prioritize safety. We are committed to your well-being and will continue to provide all possible assistance during these challenging times,” the government statement said.
Meanwhile, it mentioned that private institutions in Bangladesh where Indian students are enrolled have not been involved in the protests and are considered safe. Institutional heads have advised students to stay within their educational campuses and avoid venturing outside for their safety.
