Bangladesh’s textile collapse driving infiltration into Assam: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has attributed the rising infiltration from Bangladesh to the collapse of its textile industry and illegal employment by Indian factory owners. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma outlined the economic and security challenges posed by the influx, which has seen a significant rise in recent months.

“The collapse of Bangladesh’s textile industry has left many unemployed, prompting a daily influx of 20-30 individuals into Assam and Tripura,” Sarma said at a news conference in Guwahati on Wednesday. “Many of these individuals are being employed illegally by Indian factory owners as cheap labour, creating an economic incentive for this migration.”

The Chief Minister emphasized that the issue was discussed at length during the North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting and in talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Sarma also warned against Indian industries employing infiltrators. “Industries that employ infiltrators for cheap labour are violating the law and compromising national security. We will take stringent action against them to eliminate these economic incentives,” he asserted.

Sarma noted that the majority of those infiltrating belong to Bangladesh’s majority Muslim community, who are a minority in India. “This year alone, around 1,000 infiltrators have been pushed back. We are taking a tough stance against those incentivizing this migration and have implemented robust coordination mechanisms with agencies like the IB and NIA to address associated security concerns,” he said.

Sarma said not a single Hindu Bangladeshi infiltrator has been detected in the past five months. “This shows that the Hindu community is not fleeing in large numbers. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the central government is working to ensure their safety in Bangladesh” he added.

Highlighting the broader security implications, Sarma revealed that Assam Police had uncovered a significant jihadi module linked to the influx. “Assam Police is actively working to dismantle extremist networks. With the support of intelligence agencies, we will ensure that Assam does not become a safe haven for such activities,” he stated.
