Bar Association seeks clarity regarding Law Minister’s statement on Guwahati High Court relocation

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 8: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has raised significant concerns about the Assam government’s plan to move the Gauhati High Court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati.

On Thursday, the GHCBA sought clarification from Assam Law Minister Ranjeet Kumar Das over statements he made concerning the relocation in the state assembly.

The Bar Association of Guwahati High Court, Sr. Advocate Mrinal kr Choudhury, told a reporter on Thursday, “Our association is particularly troubled by the minister’s remarks that contradicted assurances previously given by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. It has come to the notice of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association through media reports that Shri Ranjit Kumar Das, the Hon’ble Minister of Law, Govt. of Assam, has made a statement in the Assembly on February 6, 2024, to the effect that it has been decided to shift the Gauhati High Court and all Courts and Tribunals in the Kamrup (Metro) District to a place called Rangmahal in North Guwahati in order to provide adequate facility of space, sitting arrangements, a library for lawyers, and the parking of vehicles.”

“We are shocked by such a statement made by the Hon’ble Minister, which is contrary to the assurance given by Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, to the representatives of the association.”

Also, the association earlier submitted a memorandum inter alia to the Hon’ble Chief Minister and resorted to a sit-in demonstration opposing such a move, which
was also supported by other associations of lawyers in the city.

The statement of the Hon’ble Law Minister also indicates that the stand of the state government has been communicated to the association. The association states with dismay that it has not been communicated with any such decision of the state government regarding the shifting of the High Court.

The Association therefore demands that the Hon’ble Law Minister clarify this matter in the Assembly itself at the earliest.
