Shillong, Jan 9: International pop sensation Ed Sheeran took fans in Bengaluru by surprise when he decided to perform on Church Street. However, the impromptu gig was cut short by the city police, despite the singer claiming to have obtained prior permission.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, showing Sheeran casually dressed and performing his hit song Shape of You before the police intervened. “We have the permission to be here, but this policeman is shutting it down,” the singer was heard telling the crowd as an officer unplugged his microphone.
The incident sparked mixed reactions online. Some netizens were amused, calling it a classic “Only in India” moment, while others were frustrated, with one user writing, “It’s just very embarrassing.” Another quipped, “Iska challan pounds mein niklega (his fine will be issued in pounds).”
On the other hand, some defended the officer, arguing that he was simply doing his job. One comment read, “Lmaooo, uncle doesn’t discriminate between goras and local street singers! He deserves an award.”
Despite the buzz, the Bengaluru Police have yet to release an official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, Sheeran is set to perform in Shillong on Wednesday, where a packed stadium of fans awaits him.
