Bhutan King visits Jogighopa IWT Terminal, strengthening trade ties with India

Guwahati, April 20: In a significant development for regional connectivity and trade, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, the King of Bhutan, visited the Inland Water Transport (IWT) terminal at Jogighopa to assess its operational functionality and technical capacity. The visit underscores Bhutan’s growing interest in utilizing the terminal as a vital port of call for cargo exports to global markets.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the terminal as “a noteworthy addition in our quest for improving infrastructure as well as encouraging inland waterways for progress & prosperity.”

The Jogighopa IWT terminal was inaugurated on February 18, 2025, by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, in the presence of Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Bhutan’s Minister of Industries, Commerce & Employment. The terminal became operational for cargo movement from the day of its inauguration, marking a new chapter in cross-border logistics.

Commenting on the royal visit, Minister Sonowal said, “It is a historic moment when the King of Bhutan, His Excellency Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk ji visited the recently inaugurated IWT Jogighopa terminal as well as the Jogighopa Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP). Both projects align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s Act East policy, aimed at inclusive growth and sustainable development. This visit further deepens the long-standing friendship, trust, and shared prosperity between India and Bhutan.”

Strategically located, the Jogighopa terminal lies 91 km from Gelephu (Bhutan), 108 km from the Bangladesh border, and 147 km from Guwahati, making it a pivotal hub for trade with both Bhutan and Bangladesh.
