Guwahati August 3: The groundbreaking ceremony of Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant to be set up by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Ltd (TSAT) was conducted at Jagiroad in Central Assam’s Morigaon district on Saturday.
The plant which is believed to be a gamechanger in the economy of the Northeast, will be set up at 30 acres of land of the already defunct Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagirad and will also bring cheers to the hundreds of the employees of the central sector industry.
Addressing the programme Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “Today is a significant day for Assam and Northeast as the Tata Group’s first Semiconductor and Test Facility in Jagiroad marks a major milestone in the region’s technological and industrial development. The facility is expected to bring a golden era to India’s semiconductor sector.”
Sarma said this is a gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Assam, which the people of the state will always remember with gratitude.
“The Tata Group has been providing livelihoods to around 1 lakh people in Assam’s tea industry and has also been serving the public through its medical facilities for yers together,”. Sama said.
“Due to the presence of terrorist activities in Assam 15 years ago, industrialization could not take place, but now with the improvement in the law and order situation, the Assam government has requested the Tata Group to invest in the state. As a result of the continuous efforts of the central and state governments, the Tata Group has come forward to invest Rs 27,000 crore to set up a semiconductor project in Jagiroad,” he said.
“This ₹27,000 cr plant has an employment potential of over 27,000 jobs and will attract a world-class industrial ecosystem that will spur India’s quest to become a global leader in new age tech, the chief minister said.
“Tata semiconductor plant is expected to create over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. The first phase of the plant is scheduled to be operational by mid-2025,” he further said.
“Already, 1,000 Assamese youths have been trained by the Tata Group in Bengaluru, and they will be the first to get jobs in the project,” the chief minister added.
Addressing the gathering, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekharan said the country’s first Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility in Jagiroad will produce 48 million chips daily for electric vehicles, mobile phones, and various medical equipment.
The event was attended by Assam industry ministers Bimal Borah, water resource minister Pijush Hazarika, power minister Nandita Garlosa, revenue minister Jogen Mohan, chief secretary Ravi Kota and social activist Ranjit Barthakur.
The programme for the Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India was notified on December 21, 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.
On February 29, the Union cabinet approved the proposal for Tata’s semiconductor unit in Morigaon and 2 other units.
The proposed capacity of this unit is 4.83 crore semiconductor packages per day
This unit will be the site for the development of indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies including flip chip and I-SIP (integrated system in package) technologies. These technologies are extremely critical for key applications such as automotive (especially electric vehicles), communications, network infrastructure and others.
85,000 industry-ready manpower at BTech, MTech and PhD levels in semiconductor chip design area is being trained at 113 academic institutions across the country. 9 of these are in the Northeast.
