Tura, Feb 11: With the objective to promote quality consciousness and awareness about standardization, certification, and hallmarking among key stakeholders in the region, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standards Body, organized a Sensitization and Awareness Program for Standardization and Conformity Assessment in Tura, on Tuesday, emphasizing on consumer awareness and standards compliance.

Scientific Officers from BIS conducted the presentations covering a range of topics, including quality standards, certification processes, the importance of hallmarking, and the advantages of standardization across diverse industries.

The program aims to achieve several key outcomes, including increased awareness among government departments about the importance of mandating BIS-certified goods in tenders. It seeks to enhance cooperation from academia in the formulation of standards while also improving consumer understanding of the BIS Care app and the role of BIS in ensuring product safety.

Additionally, the program also focused on educating industries regarding both mandatory and voluntary BIS standards and compliance requirements.

The program engaged participation from various stakeholder groups, including; Officials from Government Departments (Consumer Affairs, Industry, Food Safety, Public Works, Rural Development) and Industrialists, Entrepreneurs, and MSME Representatives (Food Processing, Textiles, Construction Materials, Furniture Manufacturing, Agro-based Industries, Handicrafts, Local Manufacturing).

Along with Consumer Organizations and Local Consumer Welfare Groups; Jewellery Associations and Hallmarking Centers; Retailers, Traders, and Market Associations; Farmers’ Cooperatives and Agro-Based Enterprises (Dairy, Tea Production, Organic Farming, Food Processing).

Hospitality and Tourism Industry representatives from academic institutions also participated in the awareness session.
