BJP District President Arrested for Alleged Assault on Polling Officer in Tripura

Agartala, April 29: The ruling BJP in Tripura faced a significant setback as Kajal Das, the president of its North Tripura district, was arrested today by police and produced in the court said a press release of the office of the CEO Tripura.

This action comes in response to a viral video showing Das allegedly slapping a presiding officer at a polling station in Bagbasa constituency on April 26, the polling day of the East Tripura parliamentary constituency.

According to a senior police official, a complaint was lodged against Kajal Das by the Assistant Returning Officer of Dharmanagar, leading to a specific case being registered against him.

Jayanta Debnath, the Officer in-charge of Kadamtala police station where the case was filed, stated that an investigation was conducted based on reports from sector officers, micro observers, and the viral video.

The video purportedly shows Kajal Das and several unidentified individuals physically assaulting a presiding officer at polling station number 22 of the Bagbasa assembly constituency.

Debnath confirmed that a complaint had been lodged by the ARO Dharmanagar, resulting in the registration of a case under sections 353, 332, and 131 of the Representation of People’s Act and section 34 of the IPC.

He emphasized that the law would take its own course, and police had already obtained the viral video, clearly identifying Kajal Das.
