Shillong, Aug 29: NPP leader and deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday said BJP’s former Mawsynram legislator Himalaya M Shangpliang has expressed his desire to join the National People’s Party (NPP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections slated to be held next year.
However, the party is yet to decide on the allotment of tickets for the Shillong parliament seat.
“He (Shangpliang) has expressed his keen interest to join the NPP. So let him first join the party (then we will discuss the ticket for the Shillong seat),” Dhar told reporters.
The NPP leader informed that about 7-8 candidates have expressed their interest to contest the MP election from Shillong on an NPP ticket.
“In view of this, the party will soon sit to decide on the matter. There is a proper procedure we need to follow for selection of a candidate. Therefore, we will screen and we will select the best candidate,” he said.
Dhar further informed that the NPP will try to finalise the name of its candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat by the last week of September.
When asked, the NPP leader said that there is no move to approach the sitting Congress MP Vincent H Pala to join the party’s fold.
“Pala is from Congress, why should he seek a ticket from us? There is also no move from the NPP to approach him to join us,” he said while adding that the NPP has decided to work hard to unseat Pala.
Meanwhile, the NPP has decided to again field sitting Tura MP Agatha Sangma in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
