BJP Meghalaya condemns vandalization of U Tirot Sing’s statue in Dhaka

Must read

Shillong, Aug 6: The BJP Meghalaya as strongly condemned the destruction of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem’s state at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka by unruly mob following major political upheaval in the country after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister and leaving the country.

“In a disgraceful case of cultural terrorism, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Dhaka, has been gutted by Jihadists in Bangladesh and a memorial dedicated to U Tirot Sing, inaugurated less than a year ago and placed at the entrance of the building has been destroyed. State BJP has taken strong exception to this wanton act of vandalism that insults the memory of a hero and hurts the sentiments of all communities of our state and nation,” BJP Meghalaya’s Chief Spokesperson, Mariahom Kharkrang, said in a press statement on Tuesday.

He said the party has appealed to the central government to take up the matter with whoever is in charge of the neighbouring country at this moment, to ensure protection of such memorials and bring an end to the violence that is being unleashed on minorities in Bangladesh.

“The images coming out of Bangladesh should shock any civilized person, anywhere in the world. The vandalism of U Tirot Sing’s memorial, as well as the attack on minorities and their places of worship in Bangladesh is unacceptable and has left all of us in utter dismay. We pray that right sense prevails and peace returns immediately,” he added.
