Guwahati, Jan 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again secured a victory in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) elections held in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. With a substantial win, the BJP claimed 25 seats out of the 30-member council, which included six uncontested seats and three won by independent candidates.
The Assam State Election Commission officially declared the results after a day-long counting process that commenced at 8 a.m. on Friday and concluded late into the night.
In the 30-member North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, 28 members are elected through the electoral process, while the remaining two members are nominated.
The BJP formed the NCHAC government in 2019 after winning 19 seats. The next best was Congress, with two seats. Independent candidates won most of the other seats.
The NCHAC is the third tribal council under the Sixth Schedule in Assam, where the BJP rules on its own or in alliance with regional parties. The other two are the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the Bodoland Territorial Council.
Former militant leader Niranjan Hojai won from the Hatikhali constituency. Polling for 22 seats in the NCHAC election was held on January 8, and a voter turnout of 85.78 percent was recorded.
