Guwahati, March 13: Ahead of the first phase of Assam Assembly polls that will be held on March 27, in what can be termed as perhaps the first case of political violence, a member of the incumbent BJP was on Friday stabbed to death in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.
Identified as Debananda Gogoi, a booth president in Bordumsa in the district along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, was found dead at around 5 pm on Friday.
Locals said blood was gushing from multiple stab wounds on his chest and on the side of his lower abdomen, when they found him.
Gogoi had just attended a BJP rally and was returning back home when he was attacked with sharp object, police sources said.
His family members have alleged that earlier on Friday morning at around 9 am, a man named Jaichandra Gogoi gave his brother “death threats” to join the newly floated Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
