GUWAHATI, Jan 31: The Assam BJP launched a fierce attack on the Congress on Thursday, accusing it of spreading lies to derail the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit and obstruct the state’s progress.
Speaking at a press conference at Vajpayee Bhawan in Basistha, BJP spokesperson Subhash Dutta alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi had been issuing misleading statements about the summit. “His comments suggest that Congress is conspiring to present a distorted image of Assam before the world,” Dutta claimed.
He further accused Congress’s social media wing of maligning the state government’s development efforts, fearing that rapid progress under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would undermine their political relevance.
Refuting Gogoi’s assertion that the government could not sustain existing industries, Dutta challenged him to name any non-functional entities. “Since the BJP took charge, most PSUs have been revived. Assam Gas Company Ltd and Assam Petrochemicals Ltd are now profit-making entities,” he asserted.
Highlighting Assam’s industrial growth, Dutta cited the capacity expansion of Numaligarh Refinery from 3 MMT to 9 MMT between 2016 and 2021, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also pointed to infrastructure developments, including the Guwahati Airport expansion and Pancharatna Bridge construction.
Dutta emphasized that Advantage Assam 2.0 aims to accelerate industrialization and economic growth by attracting foreign investments, particularly in renewable energy. “Congress is desperate to derail progress because Assam’s GSDP has surged from $21.4 billion in 2013-14 to $60.8 billion in 2023-24. They see the rising popularity of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and feel threatened,” he remarked.
He also criticized a Congress leader from Karnataka for dismissing Assam as unsuitable for a semiconductor project, highlighting the state’s efforts to attract international investors, including CM Sarma’s visits to Japan and South Korea.
Dutta reiterated that the summit aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Act East Policy’ and is expected to bring significant investments across sectors like roadways, civil aviation, and inland water transport.
“Congress must stop playing politics at the cost of Assam’s future. This summit will be a milestone in the state’s journey toward economic prosperity,” Dutta said.
