Blast in Kerala’s Convention Centre Updates: 1 dead, several injured; Police confirms use of IED

Kochi, Oct 29: One person died and several others were injured in an explosion at a Convention Centre in Kalamassery on Sunday morning.

According to Kerala DGP Dr Shaik Darvesh Saheb, the blast occurred in the middle of a prayer at 9:40 am at Zamra International Convention & Exhibition Centre in which one person died and 36 persons are undergoing treatment.

Reports said that at least three blasts occurred within minutes after the prayer meeting started.

Meanwhile, National Security Guard (NSG) has rushed one of its bomb disposal units from Delhi to Kerala to collect and inquire about the materials used in the explosion that took place at Zamra International Convention and Exhibition Centre in the Kalamassery area in Ernakulam district.

Kerala DGP Dr Shaik Darvesh Saheb said that “…Preliminary investigation shows it is an IED device and we are investigating it…”

Ganesh Mohan, RMO, Kalamassery Medical College said, “Right now, we have, 10 patients in the Burn ICU of which, 2 are on ventilator, and 1 more is critical. Everybody has been given adequate treatment…”

Former Kerala Minister and CPI-M Leader MA Baby said, “It is very unfortunate that life is lost. Some people are critically injured. The MLA from Kalamassery, where this has happened is from CPI-M and he is a state minister, P Rajeev. He is a central committee member, he was here. The CM has directed him to go to Kerala immediately. He has already left… Ministers who are available in Trivandrum are also moving to Ernakulam. The police have been directed by the CM that it should be a foolproof query, to be carried out without losing any time… What has to be done, only Kerala CM can say… Kerala Police is very efficient in inquiring about such a matter. If the central government, NIA would like to help Kerala police, it is always welcome…”

After the incident, teams of counter-terror sleuths and National Security Guards (NSG) have been dispatched to the blast site.

Following this incident, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, “It’s a very unfortunate incident. We are collecting details regarding the incident. All top officials are there in Ernakulam. DGP is moving to the spot. We are taking it very seriously. I have spoken to DGP. We need to get more details after the investigation”.

MoS for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V. Muraleedharan said, “The incident of the bomb blast in a prayer meeting of the Christian community in Kochi is a shocking incident. It is disturbing to note that Kerala is becoming a place where such incidents are happening which are considered a terrorist act. The Home Minister has already spoken to the chief minister of Kerala. I also had a telephone call with the CM…”

Former Union Minister and BJP leader Alphons KJ says, “…There were multiple blasts apparently… The situation is extremely critical…I have been warning for a long time that in Kerala, both left and right, is supporting terrorism…This has been happening in Kerala for a very long time…Today Kerala is in the grip of terrorism. This has to stop…”
