Guwahati, Nov 19: The body of a woman believed to be the sixth member of a family abducted in Manipur’s Jiribam on November 11 was found floating in the Barak River in Assam’s Cachar district late Monday afternoon.
Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta confirmed the discovery in the Singerbond area of Lakhipur. “The body is suspected to belong to the sixth member of the abducted Jiribam family. It appears the body was thrown into the river upstream and carried by the current. Postmortem procedures will follow at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH),” Mahatta said.
The grim discoveries began on Friday when the bodies of three family members—Telem Thoibi Devi (31), her daughter Telem Thajmanbi Devi (8), and her sister-in-law’s infant son Laisram Langamba Singh (8 months)—were recovered near the Assam-Manipur border.
On Sunday, the bodies of Yurembam Rani Devi (65), the family matriarch, and her grandson Laisram Chingkheiganba Singh (2.5 years) were also found in the same area.
This latest recovery brings the death toll to six from this family. Officials reported that on November 12, a total of 12 bodies were brought to SMCH from Manipur. Five more bodies were later transferred to the facility. Of these, 10 were airlifted back to Churachandpur in Manipur on Saturday, with the remaining awaiting postmortem and transfer.
Authorities continue to investigate the tragic incident as tension simmers near the Assam-Manipur border.
