Itanagar, May 1: In a noteworthy stride towards gender equality, Tungam Riba from Old Dari Village, Leparada district, has made history by becoming the first female bus conductor in Arunachal Pradesh. With a bachelor’s degree in Arts, Riba chose to defy conventional career paths and pursue her passion, setting a groundbreaking example for women everywhere.
Riba’s journey to this unprecedented role began when she applied for a position at Arunachal Pradesh University (APU) in Pasighat. Facing a society often bounded by gender-specific roles, her path was not smooth. However, her unwavering determination and resilience saw her through, as she successfully secured the role of a bus conductor on a contingent basis.

This achievement is a personal victory for Riba and a beacon of empowerment for women across the state and beyond. Her story vividly illustrates the courage and the relentless pursuit of one’s dreams, regardless of societal barriers.
The state has acknowledged her pioneering role with admiration. Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to social media to celebrate Riba’s accomplishment, saying, “Proud of Tungam Riba, female bus conductor. Hailing from Old Dari village in Leparada, Riba, who is BA, has set an incredible example to break stereotypes and be self-reliant! Currently working as a contingent staff at Arunachal State University, Pasighat, her feat is inspiring. ”
