BSF jawan drowns in Bandari waterfalls during picnic in South Garo Hills

Tura, Sept 22: In a tragic incident, a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel drowned at the Bandari waterfalls near Durabanda village in South Garo Hills on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Sub Inspector JE (Electrical), Suman Kumar Sona. He had gone on a picnic to the waterfalls with a colleague from the SHQ Dobasipara camp in Tura on Sunday morning.

The Bandari waterfalls, situated about 25 kilometers from Dobasipara, falls under the jurisdiction of the Sangknigre police station in the South Garo Hills district.

The incident reportedly occurred about 9 AM, when Sona took a plunge into the cold waters of the falls but failed to resurface for a long time. Noticing his absence, his colleague, Sumit Singh, launched a frantic search but was unable to locate him. Efforts to contact him via his mobile also proved unsuccessful.

Upon being alerted, BSF teams, along with Tura police and local rescue squads, rushed to the scene. The villagers also joined in the search operation. After hours of intensive search, Sona’s body was recovered from deep waters of the falls late in the afternoon.

This is the second drowning incident at Bandari waterfalls within a year.
