Tura, Sep 22: A cattle smuggler was shot dead by the BSF on Thursday at the Indo-Bangladesh border under Kharuabandha police station area of South Salmara Mankachar district.
This incident is said to have taken place around 7 p.m.
The cattle smuggler was shot dead by the 45th Battalion BSF in the BSF camp area of Dipchar.
The deceased smuggler was identified as Mintu Sheikh (27), the son of Shajahan Ali of Kanaimara village in the district.
He was killed instantly when the BSF opened fire on him as he tried to smuggle cattle over a barbed wire fence at the international border.
In a similar incident, a truck driver was shot dead by the BSF on the Pynursla-Dawki road for allegedly smuggling cattle to the India-Bangla border in Meghalaya.
The incident occurred at Mawshun village under Pynursla Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Roning Nongkynrih of Jalynteng village in East Khasi Hills district.
According to a senior BSF Official, “There were four other trucks behind and when the first truck tried to hit and run over the MCP. The BSF personnel fired in the air. An investigation is on at the moment to ascertain the cause of the death of the driver.”

The BSF official further informed that the incident occurred in an area where further down the road was the “unfenced” Indo-Bangla border, which is the hub of cattle smuggling to Bangladesh.
BSF also said that after the incident, villagers in the area pelted stones at the BSF camp at Pyrdiwah while demanding that the personnel who opened the fire be handed over to them.
“We have filed a complaint before the police about the stone pelting at our camp,” the BSF official said.
