Guwahati, Feb 1: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s 2025-26 Union Budget annoucement of setting up of a state-of-the-art urea plant in Assam will be a game changer for the entire Northeast as it will not only help achieve self-sufficiency in fertilizer availability but also better channelize our natural gas resources.

The 12.7 lakh metric urea plant will come up in Namrup area in Dibrugarh district of Assam.

The announcement follows extensive discussions between Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister JP Nadda about expanding the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL), a vital player in Assam’s industrial ecosystem.

The Namrup Fertilizer Shramik Union (NFSU) on Saturday welcomed the Budget 2025 announcement of setting up a fourth urea plant in Namrup.

Tileswar Bora, advisor of NFSU said, “It’s a big day for us because, after 18 years of protest, we are getting the fourth plant at Namrup. We would like to thank Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and our local MLA Taranga Gogoi for pressing the issue to the Centre. We also like to thank Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal who always stood behind us for setting up the plant,”.

“It’s a historic day for us, and we are thankful to everyone who supported us,” Bora said.

The Rs 500 crore investment will include the construction of two Nano Urea plants aimed at modernizing existing facilities and scaling up production. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to strengthen industrial infrastructure in Northeast India and promote self-sufficiency in fertilizer production.

Beyond industrial growth, the project brings a comprehensive social upliftment plan for Namrup. A new community hall and sports facilities for children are planned, promising a better quality of life for local residents.

For the people of Namrup, the announcement marks the realization of a long-cherished dream. “We welcome this decision and thank the government for addressing our demands. For years, we protested and called for a new urea plant, and now it’s finally happening,” shared an enthusiastic resident of Namrup.

“What a historic day for Assam ! Union Budget2025 has announced a 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Narump, a long standing demand of the people of Assam” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on X.

He expressed his optimism about the project’s transformative potential. “After the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, this urea facility will be a game changer for the entire Northeast,” he said. “It will not only help us achieve self-sufficiency in fertilizer availability but also better channelize our natural gas resources.”

The plant is expected to not only meet the rising demand for fertilizers in Assam and neighboring states but also contribute significantly to agricultural productivity and regional connectivity.
