Businessman accuses Garo Hills cops of extortion

Tura, Aug 12: A coal businessman from Nangalbibra in South Garo hills has accused police from a neighbouring district of extortion and assault during a late night incident, even as the concerned district police chief has ordered an investigation to bring out the truth.

The businessman, one B Singh, was travelling through North Garo Hills when he was subjected to police checking on the main road heading up to East Garo Hills.

Although the details leading up to his assault remain sketchy, the victim lodged a police complaint at Resubelpara, district headquarters of North Garo Hills on Thursday.

In his complaint he accused police from Dainadubi, who were conducting a road checking at Gairong village area of assaulting him and a friend who were travelling from Dudhnoi to Nangalbibra.

He has charged Garo Hills police of robbing him of Rs. 1 lakh and even taking away some banking credit cards. He also sustained a few injuries from the assault.

North Garo Hills has given the inquiry to a Deputy SP to investigate all the allegations.
