Shillong, Oct 26: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said he has directed the Chief Secretary to take up the matter of Byrnihat being tagged as the most polluted area in the country with Assam counterpart.
An air quality index report by Central Pollution Control Board (AQI) tagged Byrnihat as the most polluted area in the country with an air quality index of 302 at 4 PM on October 25, 2023 and was labelled as ‘very poor’. The air quality index of nearby metropolitan Guwahati was ‘Satisfactory’ with air quality index value of 63. In contrast, Shillong’s air quality was tagged as ‘Good’ with air quality index value of 15.
The Dy CM said the pollution could very well be because of the factories and industries on Assam side as the Meghalaya side hardly has any factory.
“In as far as Byrnihat is concerned, the left side while going to Guwahati is Meghalaya and the right side is Assam. I think you must have seen quite a number of factories all along the right side whereas from our left side we have only a designated industrial estate and we do also have factories but it is well monitored by the MSPCB. As far as Assam is concerned, I have asked the Chief Secretary to take up this matter with the Assam counterpart to find out ways and means on how to monitor because we can’t go and monitor those factories in Assam which were functioning till now,” he said.
