Shillong, April 30: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development, maintenance, and management of a 4-lane Greenfield access-controlled National Highway No. 06. This 166.80 km high-speed corridor will stretch from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam, under the Hybrid Annuity Mode, with a total capital outlay of ₹22,864 crore.
Of the total project length, 144.80 km falls within Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam.
The Greenfield corridor is set to significantly enhance traffic flow between Guwahati and Silchar, reducing both travel time and distance. It will also improve connectivity to the states of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam, thereby boosting national logistics efficiency.
Beyond transport benefits, the project is expected to spur economic activity and industrial development in Meghalaya, especially in the cement and coal-producing regions through which it passes. It will also facilitate access for national and international tourists travelling via Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar airports, promoting tourism across scenic destinations in the Northeast.
The corridor will traverse key districts including Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, and the Cachar district in Assam. It will help decongest the existing NH-06 and align with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to strengthen multimodal infrastructure.

Strategically integrated with major transport corridors—NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37—the project will ensure seamless connectivity to cities and towns, including Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khliehriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.
Upon completion, the Shillong–Silchar corridor is expected to play a pivotal role in regional economic development and inter-state connectivity, linking Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Imphal, Aizawl, and Agartala. This transformative infrastructure initiative is in line with the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promising employment generation, industrial growth, and overall socio-economic upliftment across Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
