Campaign launched to propagate demand for winter capital in Garo Hills

Tura, Feb 23: The A’chik State Peoples’ Front (ASFP), a newly established civil body has launched an awareness campaign to seek attention of the government for establishment of winter capital in Tura.

The campaign was launched at Chisim A’pal in North Garo Hills yesterday. The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) spearheading the demand for nearly a decade has partnered with ASFP to take the campaign forward.

The campaign programme was participated by village headman from different parts of North Garo Hills, including religious leaders.

Secretary of ASPF, Bernita Marak, said that the demand for winter capital is rooted in an ‘oral agreement’ made by the founders of the state, and it is not a new demand.

“Unfortunately, this agreement has not been fulfilled to date. ASPF has been raising this concern repeatedly, and recently submitted a joint memorandum with the GSMC to reiterate our demand to the Chief Minister,” a statement issued by the organisation said.

Marak opined that the establishment of a Winter Capital in Tura would facilitate equitable development in the Garo Hills region.

“The financial burden of traveling to Shillong prevents many residents from accessing essential services, thus underscoring the urgent need for a Winter Capital to address these challenges,” Marak added.

The meeting has adopted a resolution to mobilize awareness programs throughout Garo Hills.

Marak also clarified that the movement and awareness campaign is not against the government, but rather a plea to fulfill the long-cherished demand of the Garo Hills region, which echoes the vision of our state’s founder and the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the late Capt. Williamson A. Sangma.
