Captain Williamson A. Sangma’s death anniversary: Local holiday declared on Oct 25 in SWGH

Tura, Oct 16: The Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Ampati on Monday informed that all State government offices, Magisterial Courts, Revenue and Educational institute will remain closed on October 25 in SWGH.

Holiday has been declared on account of Death Anniversary of Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of the state.

He sworn in as the first chief minister of Meghalaya on January 21, 1972,

Sangma also served as as the first Garo Governor of Mizoram in 1989.

Captain W.A. Sangma was born in the South Garo Hills district of Baghmara.

It was in 1952 that he started his political career after serving in the military and was later elected as the Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
