Nongpoh, Sept 16: In a bid to unearth football talent hidden in the farthest corners of the state, the Risyon Sport Club launched the Risyon Gift Grassroots Initiative Football Tournament on September 15 at Mawlong village in Ri Bhoi District.
The tournament saw participation from 23 teams across the district. Chairman of Ri Bhoi Tourism and Environmental Development Forum, Plielad Tiewsoh, inaugurated the event in the presence of SK Mallai, a representative from Risyon Sport Club, among others.
SK Mallai spoke about the Club’s objective behind organizing the Grassroots Football tournament, emphasizing the aim to provide a platform for promising talents residing in remote areas. These talents, if identified, would have the chance to represent Risyon Sport Club in various tournaments held across the state.
“While our state boasts of talented youth, their potential often remains confined to their villages due to a lack of opportunities. Platforms like this offered by the club can unlock the potential of our youth,” Mallai noted.
Plielad Tiewsoh expressed his delight and commended Risyon Sport Club for proactively scouting young talents. He expressed hope that such platforms would pave the way for the youth to shine in their future endeavors.
The opening match featured a clash between New Star FC Mawlong and Umdohkha Them FC.
