Shillong, Jan 29: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, organized two awareness programmes under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan in Pathew and Markasa villages of Eastern West Khasi Hills to educate locals on substance abuse and its consequences.
The first programme at Parïong PHC, Pathew, was attended by villagers led by Headman A. Marngar. Dr. L.S.L. Kharkongor, in charge of the PHC, expressed concerns about rising drug abuse in the region, stressing the need for awareness and preventive measures. E. Marbaniang, SI of Mairang Police Station, elaborated on drug-related legal aspects and urged community cooperation in combating drug peddling.
A similar session was held at the Community Hall, Markasa, where Assistant Teacher D.L. Marsianbai commended CBC Shillong for reaching remote villages. He emphasized the broader societal impact of drug addiction and called for collective efforts in tackling the issue.
In addition to drug awareness, the programme highlighted cleanliness and sanitation under Swachhata Hi Seva Susanna L. Lyngkhoi, Block Coordinator of SBMG Mawthadraishan Block, discussed proper waste management, the importance of soak pits, and the dangers of plastic waste burning.
The event also witnessed dance and quiz competitions, the winners were awarded with cash prizes. A plantation drive under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and a cleaning campaign was also conducted, fostering community engagement.Â
