CBI arrests OIL Deputy GM and private company executive in ₹7 lakh bribery case

Must read

Guwahati, May 5: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two individuals — Prayas Chakravorty, Deputy General Manager at Oil India Limited (OIL) in Duliajan, Assam, and Jyoti Kumar Singh, DGM (Sales & Marketing) at Noida-based United Drilling Tools Ltd — for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹7 lakh.

The arrests follow a case registered by the CBI on May 3, 2025, against four accused: Chakravorty, Singh, Kunal Gupta (Managing Director of United Drilling Tools Ltd), the company itself, and unknown public servants. The complaint alleged that the public servant, in collusion with company executives, sought bribes in return for facilitating work orders and clearing payments — a scheme that caused substantial losses to the Union exchequer.

According to the CBI, the accused public servant initially demanded 70 grams of gold ornaments — some for himself and some allegedly intended for other officials — in exchange for awarding a contract. When the company executive cited difficulties in procuring gold, he instead agreed to deliver ₹7 lakh in cash.

Investigations revealed that the private company’s MD arranged the bribe, which was handed over to Chakravorty. The very same day, the public servant used part of the illicit cash — ₹3.73 lakh — to purchase gold coins from a shop in Noida, while taking the remaining ₹3.34 lakh home.

The CBI swiftly laid a trap, catching Chakravorty red-handed with the unaccounted cash and gold purchase documents in his possession. Both Chakravorty and Singh were subsequently arrested and are to be produced before the Special CBI Court in Ghaziabad on May 5, 2025.

Simultaneous search operations were carried out at multiple locations in Delhi, Noida, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, leading to the recovery of gold jewellery (linked to the bribe), over ₹30 lakh in cash, mobile devices, and incriminating documents.
