Shillong, Dec 20: The Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) on Tuesday clarified that they have no opposition towards fencing of the border between Meghalaya and Bangladesh but have demanded the government that the fencing should be done right from Zero Line of the border.
Briefing media persons, chairman of CCIB Sukkynjai Myrchiang said that on December 3, officials from the government came down to Rhongkong village which falls under Amlarem Sub Division to start the work on fencing despite the opposition shown by the land owners.
He added that on December 5, NGOs like KSU, HNYF and FKJGP had gone to Rhongkong village to ask them to stop the fencing work. The fencing was done from 150 yard of the international border.
“When members of the NGOs went there, they were surprised to know that the govt officials are saying that they have got permission to build the fence after paying a compensation to the land owner Wanshalan Dhar,” stated Myrchiang.
The CCIB chairman explained that the CCIB is a committee that consists of NGOs and land owners at the border areas and have always had the same agreement that they will not allow fencing from 150 yard of the international border because they will loose most of their lands used for farming.
CCIB has alleged that the government is using force to setup these fences and that even Dhar has betrayed the committee.
