Celebrated Author Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih Unveils New Novel in New Delhi

SHILLONG, MAY 31: The Government of Meghalaya hosted an enchanting evening celebrating the launch of award-winning author Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih’s latest literary work, The Distaste of the Earth, at Meghalayan Age – The Store in Connaught Place, New Delhi. The event, titled “The Art of Storytelling,” drew a diverse audience of literature enthusiasts, government officials, and cultural aficionados.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Dr. Vijay Kumar, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Government of Meghalaya; Shubhi Surana, Editor at Penguin Random House India; and esteemed local authors and cultural figures.

Dr. Nongkynrih expressed his gratitude to the guests, stating that his book offers readers moments of entertainment and contemplation about our relationship with nature, our responsibilities toward one another, and the hidden costs of our choices. The novel, looking to both a mythic past and contemporary present, invites readers on a journey of reflection and discovery.

Dr. Vijay Kumar praised Dr. Nongkynrih’s contributions and congratulated him on his new work. Reflecting on Meghalayan Age – The Store, he stated, “I am very happy that we have been able to create this space; we are making it a live space for art, craft, literature, and music. The vibrancy of the space makes everyone feel happy and proud.” The Ambassador of France, through Dr. Vijay Kumar, also conveyed his congratulations to the author.

The Distaste of the Earth is a masterful work of fiction traversing themes of love, vengeance, and man’s dominion over nature. The novel exquisitely addresses questions of earthly authority and divine ordinance, compelling readers to reconsider their anthropocentric views of the natural world.

The evening began with a mesmerizing instrumental performance by Mr. Benedict Skhemlang Hynniewta, setting an elegant and inspiring tone for the gathering. It concluded with a book signing session, where attendees had the opportunity to meet Dr. Nongkynrih and get their copies of the newly launched book signed. The event was a resounding success, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling and the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya.

About the Author:

Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih, born in Sohra, Meghalaya, is a celebrated writer known for his poetry, prose, and dramas in Khasi and English. His latest work, The Distaste of the Earth, adds to his impressive collection, which includes the forthcoming epic novel Funeral Nights (Westland/And Other Stories), The Yearning of Seeds: Poems (HarperCollins), Time’s Barter: Haiku and Senryu (HarperCollins), and Around the Hearth: Khasi Legends (Penguin). Dr. Nongkynrih’s works have been featured in renowned publications such as Planet, The New Welsh Review, PEN International, The Literary Review, and The Oxford Anthology of Writings from Northeast India. His accolades include the Northeast Poetry Award (2004), the Veer Shankar Shah-Raghunath Shah National Award (2008), Tagore Fellowship (2018), The Bangalore Review June Jazz Award (2021), and The Sparrow Literary Award (2022).
